Would you or wouldn't you touch these with a 10 foot pole?

I would like a cheap SRT8 Magnum or 300. But they are all over 100k on the odo when you dip below 20 grand. Besides the obvious pre bankruptcy Chrysler craptastic interior, I’m not sure how the reliability is on the 6.1 Hemi at this many miles.

Kinja'd!!!

This one is only slightly better miles wise. Stay away or...?

Mag? Absolutely, though maybe not from a dealer like this.

300? Nah.

Yea those dealers do seem pretty shady. But why not the 300? They are basically the same car.

Somewhere in here, there is a joke about putting a Magnum around your 10 foot pole...............

There’s other stuff I’d rather have if I wanted a sedan. The Mag has an air of coolness about it.

That’s very true. Especially since they don’t make them like that anymore. Only thing close to something like a Magnum SRT8 is probably a Mercedes E63 wagon and they only sell a few hundred of those and they are over 100 grand.

I’d give the Car Guys’ advice, as I always do - take the car to a mechanic you choose before you buy it. Part of the test drive. If you’re going to dump 12 grand into a car, spend a hundred bucks or so getting a list of everything that’s wrong with it. It’s a negotiating tool as well as what you need to know to get the car roadworthy.

I left DCX before the SRTs came out, and haven’t been back long enough with FCA to see any of them come in with any regular issues... I will say we see very few of the LX cars. That COULD be a good thing...

Might get away with the 300 with that mileage... but I’m not comfortable buying anything over that amount of mileage unless its a project or 2nd vehicle.

Also, I hope the transmission fluid and filter in that Mercedes sourced NAG1 5Gtronic has been changed.

i’d take the magnum. even if it was from Daimler’s reign of terror, a 425hp wagon is definitely cool. I had an 05 RT Magnum and it was an awesome sleeper. Other than a subtle RT badge on the tailgate, you’d never suspect this innocent looking grocery-getter had a 340hp hemi under the hood. Surprised a lot of mustangs with that car.

Now the 300, don’t buy that unless you want people to think you’re a drug dealer. Unless you actually are a drug dealer. But if you were, you’d already have one. and it’d be rollin’ on 24's with either an “illest” or shocker sticker in the back window. And every chrome stick-on accessory that Autozone has.

Yea that could be a good thing. Or the owners are just driving them into the ground. The few you do see what are the problems?

I was attracted to the Magnum because of the price, but that mileage is the price you pay for it being that cheap. Honestly the 300's mileage is my limit of where I would go buying a car. Do those MB sourced 5 speeds have issues though?

I think the Magnum still looks nice, but the 300s do nothing for me.

Mostly old 3.5L issues. Water pumps, EGR issues. We delivered a Scat Pack Charger the other day that right off the truck needs a $500 “steering module” (clockspring & steering angle sensor).

Oh and they ALL need front suspension work, but that’s a given with any car around here with our roads.

The only issue they have is that they have no dipstick. Add one aftermarket. Change the fluid out and go beat on it. That tranny has been put behind 700lb of torque v12's before. Its a stout box.

Kinja'd!!!1

The Scat Pack being delivered with issues is scary. I’m surprised you don’t see any of the horrible, horrible 2.7. There was no reason a car the size of the LX triplets should have had 190 hp.

I think they’re all dead/being limped around/being worked on by shady corner shop mechanics.

Kinja'd!!! whoarder is tellurium > LJ909

Kinja'd!!!2

Yep , as Bruno Martini noted.

It is a strong transmission and it is the reason why it was still used in the SRT cars and the V12 AMG models (even after the 7Gtronic introduction).

I would add that they just need to have fluid/filter changes over the lifespan.

The power train is pretty bulletproof. The rest of the car has been know to do some weird shit, but the LX platform is known so well in and out by now that you should be able to find help easily.

Probably more at issue is that the last owner(s) might not have cared to maintain a vehicle like this. I would only consider with a verifiable service history. Any older aspirational vehicle probably was last owned by someone who’d rather invest in 24"s than an oil change...

Not sure any 100k vehicle should be worth over 10 grand..negotiate a reputable service contract 2/24k powertrain at least into asking price

Do it. They are stout cars, mine only has 60k miles on it right now, but we just did 6600 miles on a road trip last year like it was nothing. And I managed an average of about 21-23mpg! Not bad for a 4200lb wagon with 425+ hp.

21-23? That's pretty damn good for a huge 6.1 liter. I really want one. Might go a little newer to get one under 100 thousand miles.

If you can, I say do it. I got mine in 2010 with about 30k miles for $21k, they don’t really lose much value if you keep the mileage lower. Or say fuck it and drive the piss out of it everywhere, because damn are they fun.
